Can dogs eat peanuts?

Yes, in small amounts.

A few plain, unsalted, dry-roasted or raw peanuts are safe for most dogs. They're high in fat, so keep it to a few, not every day. Skip salted, honey-roasted, and flavored peanuts, and remove the shells.

Only plain, unsalted peanuts

Salted, honey-roasted, chocolate-covered, and spicy peanuts add salt, sugar, and seasonings dogs don't need. Peanuts are legumes, not true tree nuts, and are one of the safer nuts for dogs.

How many peanuts can a dog have?

Just a few at a time, and not every day. Peanuts are high in fat, which can cause stomach upset and, in some dogs, pancreatitis. Dogs that are overweight or have had pancreatitis should skip them.

Shells

Peanut shells are hard to digest and can be a choking hazard. Shell peanuts before sharing them.

Frequently asked questions

It's uncommon, but possible. Watch for itching, swelling, vomiting, or diarrhea the first time, and stop if you see any.

Can dogs eat honey-roasted peanuts?

No. They're coated in sugar and often salt.

My dog ate a bag of salted peanuts. What should I do?

Call your vet. A large amount of salt and fat can cause vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst, or pancreatitis.
