Can dogs eat oranges?

Yes, in small amounts.

Oranges aren't toxic to dogs, and a segment or two of peeled orange makes a fine treat. Remove the peel and seeds, and keep portions small, because the sugar and acid can upset the stomach.

How much orange can a dog have?

One or two small segments is usually enough, and less for small dogs. Oranges are sweet and acidic, so too much can cause vomiting or diarrhea. Dogs that are overweight or diabetic should have very little or none.

Peel and seeds

Remove all the peel and pith. The peel isn't toxic, but it's tough, can cause a blockage, and contains citrus oils that can irritate the stomach. Pick out the seeds too, which can be a choking hazard.

What about other citrus fruits?

Most dogs dislike sour citrus like lemons and limes, and these are best avoided. Citrus plants, peels, and essential oils contain compounds that can irritate the stomach, and concentrated citrus oils should never be given to pets.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs drink orange juice?

It's best not to. Juice concentrates the sugar without the fiber. Fresh water is all your dog needs.

Can dogs eat clementines or mandarins?

Yes, the same rules apply: peeled, seeds removed, and only a segment or two, as they're also sugary.

Can puppies eat oranges?

A tiny piece is fine for most puppies, but many find citrus too sour, and it can upset young stomachs.
