Can dogs eat marshmallows?

No.

Marshmallows aren't a good treat for dogs. They're almost pure sugar with no nutritional value, and sugar-free marshmallows may contain xylitol, which can cause dangerously low blood sugar and liver damage. One regular marshmallow is unlikely to harm a dog.

Did your dog just eat marshmallows?

If your dog ate sugar-free marshmallows, or a lot of regular ones, call your vet or a pet poison line now. Check the label for xylitol.

Call your vet, an emergency vet, or a 24/7 pet poison line:

US numbers. A consultation fee may apply. Don't try to make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.

Sugar-free marshmallows and xylitol

Some sugar-free and "keto" marshmallows are sweetened with xylitol (also listed as birch sugar). In dogs it can drop blood sugar within an hour and damage the liver at higher doses. Signs include vomiting, weakness, wobbliness, and seizures.

Regular marshmallows

Regular marshmallows aren't toxic, but they're high in sugar and calories. Eating a bag can cause vomiting and diarrhea, and they can be a choking risk for small dogs. Hot chocolate with marshmallows adds chocolate, which is toxic.
