Can dogs eat mango?

Yes, in small amounts.

Ripe mango flesh is a safe, sweet treat for most dogs in small amounts. Always remove the large pit, which can cause choking or a blockage, and peel off the tough skin.

The mango pit is the danger

A mango pit is big, slippery, and hard. Dogs that chew or swallow one can choke or get it stuck in their gut, which may need surgery. The pit also contains small amounts of cyanide. Throw pits away where your dog can't reach them.

Call your vet if your dog swallowed a pit, or starts vomiting, stops eating, or seems uncomfortable after getting into mango.

How much mango can a dog have?

Mango is sweet and high in sugar, so keep it to a few small pieces at a time, within about 10 percent of daily calories. Too much can cause an upset stomach or diarrhea.

How to serve mango

  • Peel it: the skin is hard to digest
  • Cut the flesh away from the pit into small cubes
  • Serve fresh, or frozen for a summer treat

Skip dried mango, which is often sweetened, and mango juice or smoothies.
