Can dogs eat ham?

Only with care.

Ham isn't toxic, but it's not a good treat. It's very high in salt and fat, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst, and pancreatitis. A tiny piece now and then is unlikely to harm a healthy dog, but never give ham bones.

Why ham is a poor choice

  • High salt: can cause extreme thirst, and large amounts can lead to salt poisoning
  • High fat: can cause stomach upset and pancreatitis, a painful and sometimes serious condition
  • Glazes and seasonings: often contain sugar, honey, or spices

Never give ham bones

Cooked bones splinter easily and can injure the mouth, throat, or gut, or cause a blockage. Keep leftover bones in a bin your dog can't open.

Holiday meals

Pancreatitis cases often rise after holidays when dogs get rich leftovers. Signs include repeated vomiting, belly pain, a hunched back, and not eating. Call your vet if you see them. Plain, skinless cooked chicken or turkey is a better way to share.
