Can dogs eat corn?

Only with care.

Plain corn kernels cut off the cob are safe for most dogs in small amounts. The cob is the danger: dogs often swallow pieces or the whole cob, which can block the intestines and may need emergency surgery.

Did your dog just eat corn?

If your dog swallowed a corn cob or a large piece of one, call your vet now, even if they seem fine. Don't try to make them vomit.

Call your vet, an emergency vet, or a 24/7 pet poison line:

US numbers. A consultation fee may apply. Don't try to make your dog vomit unless a vet tells you to.

Why corn cobs are dangerous

Dogs love chewing corn cobs, but the pieces don't break down in the gut. A cob can lodge in the stomach or intestines and cause a blockage, which can be life-threatening. Dispose of cobs in a bin your dog can't open, and keep them off plates within reach.

Signs of a blockage can take a day or more to appear. Call your vet if you see:

  • Repeated vomiting
  • Not eating
  • Tiredness or low energy
  • Belly pain or a tense belly
  • Diarrhea, straining, or no poop

Corn kernels

Plain, cooked kernels cut off the cob are fine as an occasional treat. Corn is a common ingredient in dog food and isn't harmful, though a small number of dogs are allergic to it.

What about popcorn?

Plain, air-popped popcorn with no butter, salt, or flavoring is fine as an occasional treat. Avoid buttered, salted, cheese, or caramel popcorn, and unpopped kernels, which are hard on teeth and stomachs.
