Can dogs eat coconut?

Yes, in small amounts.

A little plain coconut flesh, unsweetened coconut milk, or coconut oil is safe for most dogs. Coconut is very high in fat, so keep it occasional, and never let your dog chew the shell or husk.

Keep it small: coconut is fatty

Coconut flesh and milk are high in fat. Too much can cause an upset stomach and diarrhea, and fatty foods can trigger pancreatitis in some dogs. Dogs that are overweight or have had pancreatitis should skip it.

Shell and husk

The hard shell and hairy husk can cause choking or block the gut. Keep them away from your dog.

Coconut products

  • Coconut milk and water: plain and unsweetened, a little only (coconut water is high in potassium)
  • Coconut oil: ask your vet before adding it to food regularly
  • Avoid sweetened coconut, sugar-free coconut products (possible xylitol), and coconut desserts
