Can cats eat eggs?

Yes, in small amounts.

A small amount of plain, fully cooked egg is a healthy treat for most cats, full of protein. Never feed raw egg, and skip salt, butter, milk, and seasoning.

Are eggs good for cats?

Cats are carnivores, and eggs are an easily digested source of animal protein and fat. A little cooked egg makes a good occasional treat or food topper.

Why not raw eggs?

  • Raw eggs can carry Salmonella and E. coli, which can make cats and people sick
  • Raw egg whites contain avidin, which blocks biotin (a B vitamin) and over time can cause skin and coat problems

Cooking the egg fully removes both problems.

How much egg can a cat have?

A large egg has about 70 to 80 calories, which is close to a third of a typical indoor cat's daily needs. So a teaspoon or two of chopped egg is plenty, a couple of times a week at most.

How to cook eggs for cats

  • Hard-boiled and finely chopped
  • Scrambled in a non-stick pan with no butter, oil, milk, or salt
  • No onion, garlic, chives, or seasoning, which are toxic to cats
