Can cats eat dog food?

Only with care.

A few bites of dog food won't harm your cat, since it isn't toxic. But cats can't live on it. Dog food doesn't have enough of several nutrients cats must get from their diet, and a cat fed dog food long-term can develop serious health problems.

Why cats need cat food

Cats are strict carnivores with nutritional needs dogs don't share:

  • Taurine: cats can't make enough of this amino acid, and a lack can cause heart disease and blindness
  • Arachidonic acid: a fatty acid cats must get from food; dog food is rarely supplemented with it
  • Vitamin A: cats can't make it from plants and need more of it than dog food provides
  • Protein: cats need much more protein than dogs; many dog foods have too little for a cat
  • Niacin: cats need it from animal tissue, and plant-heavy foods may not supply enough

My cat ate some dog food. Is that OK?

Yes. A few kibbles, or even a bowlful once, are very unlikely to cause problems beyond an upset stomach. The concern is a cat eating dog food regularly instead of its own food.

Keeping cats out of the dog's bowl

  • Feed pets at set mealtimes and pick up leftovers
  • Feed the dog and cat in separate rooms
  • Put the cat's food up high, where the dog can't reach it
  • Consider a microchip feeder that opens only for one pet

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs eat cat food?

A little won't hurt, but cat food is richer in protein and fat than dogs need, and eating it regularly can cause weight gain, stomach upset, or pancreatitis in some dogs.

Can I feed my cat dog food in an emergency?

For a day or two, a little dog food is better than nothing, but get cat food as soon as you can. Plain cooked chicken or fish (no bones or seasoning) can also tide a cat over briefly.

Why does my cat prefer the dog's food?

Often just curiosity, a different texture, or the fun of stealing. It's rarely a sign of a problem, but if your cat stops eating its own food, see your vet.
